Formula One cars feature one of the most complex and advanced engines (for example compare F1 engine's 20,000 RPM to 6,000-7,000 RPM of a good road car's engine) and that's not a surprise. After all, Formula One is a sport where a thousands of a second can make a difference between winning and losing. Because of this, FIA does not allow any kind of engine alternation from the original specifications which are set by FIA at the beginning of the season. We live in a world that is far from being perfect and the teams may have temptations to tweak their engines to gain advantage over their competitors. To keep the game fair, FIA checks all Formula One engines. The aim of the test is to reveal any changes that the engine manufactures may have made after the start of the season.
This year Mercedes-Benz is the first manufacturer whose engine will be checked. Tests of other engines will follow for sure.
Hopefully, the engine checks will go without any problems for the teams. The sport has already lost Super Aguri in this season because of the financial problems and it would be pity to see any other team disqualified.
